Sandcastle: Mobility Hubs Improve Access to Mobility, Address Climate Change

Josh had a good idea: "Development of mobility-as-a-service hubs in low income communities, perhaps with subsidized rentals of bike share, electric bikes, or other mobility tools?"

The Smart Oakland team had no problem escalating this comment to a post, as we are aware of a recent effort by a group of UC Berkeley graduate students that asked a similar question and then produced an excellent study, which was presented to the City last month.

To quote that study:  "Mobility hubs have the potential to address several notable deficiencies in Oakland’s present transportation system, including poor first- and last-mile access from many areas of the city to key bus and rail transit stations, and long travel times for public transit trips that do not utilize core high-frequency transit services."

The questions seems to be: How do "mobility hubs" fit into the smart city? Into a smart(er) Oakland? An adequate answer will need to speak directly to the US Department of Transportation's "vision elements" as well as Oakland's "values and priorities".

Can the 218 Consultants come to Josh's rescue?

  1. Sometimes imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? LA Metro has some good ideas, many of which are directly transferable: http://media.metro.net/board/Items/2015/03_march/20150325cacgamitem2.pdf
