Oakland.Plus -- Section 11. Goals & Objectives

Post-Hackathon Instructions for Contributors (including Smart Oakland Veterans & New Recruits)

Our all-day proposal writing "Hackathon" held yesterday at 250 FOP and online was a great success! Not only did it give the Smart Oakland community an opportunity to gather together to reflect on the ground we have covered over the past week-and-half, but to bounce ideas off of one another, affirm or bracket specific contributions, and begin to systematically order and develop those elements that are now making their way into the draft proposal.

This message (and its sibling post on www.smartoakland.com) is one of a dozen or more that focuses on a specific theme or section of the City’s response to the DOT $50 million funding opportunity. This particular message/post concerns Section 11. Goals & Objectives.

You can follow the development of Oakland’s proposal and this theme or section in particular by clicking here. Use the hyperlinks in the Table of Contents found on the second page of the Google Doc to quickly locate the section. Once in the document, you can request that I share the draft proposal with you so that you have “commenting” privileges. This will allow you to add original content, offer edits and suggestions for existing copy, and to raise questions by adding a comment. Anything more than “viewing” the Google Doc will require you to log into a valid Gmail account. Gmail accounts are free and only take a couple of minutes to set up, so I encourage you to do this if you don’t already have one or prefer to not use your personal Gmail account (you can create as many accounts as you like).

DOT expects this section to address the following:

“Provide measurable goals and objectives for your vision and describe your approach for monitoring the impact of the demonstration on mobility, safety, efficiency, sustainability, and climate change.”
If you would like to see this prompt in context, click here to access the complete DOT Smart City Challenge notice of funding.

We are pressed for time, so please make the following three simply steps a top priority in your morning or day:

  1. Visit our shared Google Doc proposal and review the latest content for this section;
  2. Contribute anything that you feel may be of value -- e.g. original copy; specific facts, data, or questions; key references; ideas for improving the organization of the technical details; etc. If you have comment privileges, then you make these contributions directly in the Google Doc; if you don't have or want comment privileges, then please leave a comment below (reply all to this email thread as the case may be) and I will throw it into the mix as soon as possible;
  3. Share this message/post with other possible contributors -- inside or outside of the City -- enlisting their help, asking them to read this message/post and explaining why you thought of them and what you thought they could contribute to improve the City's response.
That's it: easy as 1-2-3 (or A-B-C). I bet you never thought it could be that easy to help make your City smart(er)!

Cheers,

Michael
